October 17-18 Where the Wild Things Are We know we're going to love this movie...but we also wanted to share some of our favorite places to see "Wild Things" here in the L.A. area! Where the Wild Things Are website, including showtimes and locations ![]() Moorpark Teaching Zoo Yep, a real zoo on a local community college campus! Come visit exotic animals that are adoringly cared for by their passionate and articulate student caretakers. This is a highly competitive college program that trains future zoo keepers and technicians. This is a small, walkable zoo...leave the stroller in the car (free parking!) and enjoy the chance to ask lots of questions and see a zoo in action. Boo at the Moorpark College Teaching Zoo October 31-November 1, 11:00am-7:00pm Events include Trick or treat with the Animals, Encounters with Creepy Crawlers, Costume Parade, Face Painting, Games and Activities..!! Los Angeles Zoo Our city zoo is a beautiful place to spend the day! Get there early to avoid the crowds, or linger later in the day as animals get ready for feeding. Don't miss the secret universally-accessible playground at the back of the zoo, the Neil Papiano play area designed by Shane's Inspiration. Spider Pavilion Now through November 8 "The Spider Pavilion is a unique opportunity to enter a world of spiders and get to know these fascinating creatures— dispelling the myths and common fears that often surround them. Safely immerse yourself in the spiders’ habitat and observe the day-to-day lives of the Spider Pavilion residents. STAR Eco Station "STAR ECO Station is an internationally award-winning non-profit environmental education and exotic wildlife rescue center, dedicated to the mission of Preservation Through Education. Located in Culver City, CA, STAR ECO Station was established in 1997 as a division of STAR, Inc. (Science Theater Art Recreation), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that has been dedicated to improving the quality of children’s education through educational and enrichment programming since 1986." Western Heritage Festival at Underwood Family Farms Satruday-Sunday, October 17-18 "Our 6th Western Heritage Weekend...Underwood Family Farms welcomes back Spencer/Lorraine Productions' fast paced variety show, Western Music, Magic & Mirth. The entire weekend will be filled with stunt ropers, western music, cowboy poetry and even an old-time medicine show. Don your cowboy hats and come on down to the farm for a taste of the Wild West!" Fall Festival at LA Farmer's Market Friday-Sunday, October 16-18 "Join us as we fill an entire street with a petting zoo, animal races and an agricultural & educational area for kids. Coming Soon Take Your Kid to Meet Sid! at Kidspace Museum Tuesday, October 20 from 3pm - 5pm "Join First 5 California at Kidspace for a special sneak-preview of an upcoming episode of the Emmy-nominated PBS program "Sid the Science Kid." The episode - "Getting a Shot: You Can Do It!" - teaches kids how to stay healthy during flu season. Dr. Jonathan Fielding, director of public health in Los Angeles County, is scheduled to kick off the event. Children can meet and take photos with Sid and participate in fun and educational activities. Healthy snacks will be served and guests will recieve goodie bags filled with fun items for kids and resources to keep the whole family healthy. A Seemingly Idle Diversion: Doodling Workshops at the Hammer Sunday, October, 25, 3–5pm, OR Sunday, November 1, 3–5pm, OR Sunday, November 8, 3–5pm (Choose one of three) "In conjunction with the exhibition Heat Waves in a Swamp: The Paintings of Charles Burchfield, this series of workshops invites families to investigate doodling as a key part of the creative and learning process. Burchfield made scrapbooks for the hundreds of doodles he created, describing the doodles as a “free exercise in abstraction” that yielded some of his most useful motifs. Parents and kids will engage in the same process, doodling in response to music, conversation, sights, sounds, and smells. At the end of the workshop series, participants will create both a beautiful scrapbook of their doodles and a culminating artwork using their doodle motifs. The workshop will be taught by trained UCLA student artist/educators." All ages welcome, parents and children encouraged to enroll together.
