Summer Solstice at the Griffith Observatory Saturday, June 20, 12:45 and 7:55pm "Celebrate the changing seasons! Griffith Observatory will host two events to observe the summer solstice, which occurs in Los Angeles at 10:46 p.m., P.D.T., on Saturday, June 20, 2009. The first event celebrates the Sun’s “local noon” appearance, at its highest position in the sky all year, when the Sun’s projected image crosses the engraved meridian arc of the Gottlieb Transit Corridor on the west side of the Observatory. The solstice local noon occurs at 12:55 p.m., P.D.T., and will be hosted by Griffith Observatory Director, Dr. E. C. Krupp. His presentation will begin at 12:45 p.m. The second event is the summer solstice sunset, celebrated on the Observatory’s west terrace, adjacent to the west side of the building. The northernmost sunset and the end of the longest day of the year align with an engraved marker and stone line laid into pavement on the terrace. The solstice sunset occurs at 8:06 p.m., P.D.T. and will be hosted by Observatory Museum Guides. Join the aquarium's education staff and volunteers as they share tidepool tales at the "Sunday Seashore Story Studio" on June 21 from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. Listeners of all ages can join along and be part of the story using puppets and other props or may choose to read a book of their own.
