Fillmore Fish Hatchery Off a winding country highway just north of Los Angeles is the Fillmore Fish Hatchery, home to millions of baby fish that are eager for your visit. The Fillmore Fish Hatchery is open 365 days a year for self guided tours. As you pull into the sunny parking lot, you'll find a small picnic area and signs explaining to process of "stocking" that keeps trout in streams all over the Sierras. For kids? Bring quarters to purchase generous handfuls of pelleted fish food that can be thrown into the open raised concrete "beds". You'll be hypnotized by thousands of little rainbow trout as they flash to the surface to grab the food. At the far end of the hatchery where the recycled water exits is a small bird sanctuary that atrracts hundreds of birds from the area to feast on the food that washes downstream. Fun to look for egrets and heron and turtles in the water. The hatchery is on Highway 126, one mile east of Fillmore. From the hatchery, it's a short drive into downtown Fillmore, home of the Fillmore Western & Railway and a quaint downtown. Fillmore Fish Hatchery |
